Government extends the home buyer tax credit into 2010 An $8,000 tax credit is now available to first time home buyers until April 30, 2010.  A new tax credit is also now available to current homeowners moving away or moving up to a new and different home until April 30, 2010.   For both types of credits you must purchase the home (signed contracts) by April 30, 2010 and the purchase must close by June 30 of next year.   For repeat buyers, you must have used the home you sold or is being sold as a principal residence consecutively for 5 of the previous 8 years to received the $6,500 tax credit.
